Kilian Wagner has been working at Germanyâs digital association Bitkom since completing his studies in political and administrative sciences â initially as a policy officer, and today as Head of Sustainable Digital Infrastructures. He is responsible for the entire field of data centers, oversees the political framework, and coordinates studies, guidelines, and position papers. He maintains close dialogue with both the industry and policymakers.
His mission: to establish Germany as a strong and sustainable data center location â digitally sovereign, innovative, and future-proof.

Ongoing digitalization and the rapid rise of artificial intelligence are drastically increasing global demand for computing capacity. While leading nations are consolidating their technological leadership in data centers through massive investments, Germany risks falling behind. Yet high-performance data centers are not only the technological backbone for AI, cloud services, and all digital applications, but also a strategic asset for transformation, economic competitiveness, and digital sovereignty.
This talk highlights the current state of the German data center market, provides international benchmarks, and illustrates where Germany is lagging.
